River Stages
The frequent flooding of the Ohio river during the summer of 2003 and the severe flooding of the Ohio river and it's tributaries during September of 2004 and again in January of 2005 has reminded many of us about what Mother Nature can do. During these periods, most of us were glued to our computers trying to determine what the weather and the rivers had in store for us. It can and will happen again. It is for this reason that we have added this page. Listed below are some 'Links' which will allow you to find and monitor conditions for some of the primary river basins. These are the areas where most of the ASA members boats are located. However, we ask people who are in other areas, if you know of a site which covers river conditions in your area, PLEASE CONTACT US with the site address. We would like to include it in this listing. The American Sternwheel Association is not only 'dedicated to the proliferation of paddlewheel boats' but also, in trying to preserve those that already exist.
The links below present graphs which depict river conditions for the past five days, the current stage and predictions for the next five days. These graphs are from the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service; a part of the National Weather Service in conjunction with NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association).
The first link is for Marietta, Ohio; from there, you can navigate up or down river.
The second link covers the Kanawha river. It includes graphs for Kanawha Falls, Charleston at the South Side Bridge and at Old Lock 6.
The third link is what folks on the Mississippi river use (as presented to me from Ike and Linda Hastings).
